I recently returned from a 7 day Viking River Cruise through the southern area of France, sailing between Avignon and Lyon. This was my first river cruise and it was truly beautiful.
Each day there were included and optional tours available. Places we explored included Arles, Avignon, Lyon, Viviers. Sights we saw were the 3 tiered Roman aqueduct, the Camargue region, castles, magnificent homes. One of the highlights was a journey on a steam train high into the Doux region.
For me however the highlight was the magnificent medieval village of Pergoues – the most beautiful village in France. And it certainly was. This stunning medieval UNESCO listed village is perched on a hill with spectacular views of the French Alps. Pergoues is a treasure of French heritage and culture and has been the setting for movies such as The Three Musketeers. As we walked the cobblestone streets we learnt about the farmers and linen weavers who inhabited the 13th century town. Today 80 people still live in the village.
Daily port and tour updates were provided and after dinner in the lounge you could participate in fun activities such as music and trivia quizzes, listen to a local accordian player, learn about fromage – cheese followed by a tasting, local musicians came on board and delighted us with traditional songs in French and dancing. All meals were included along with wine, beer and soft drinks at both lunch and dinner. The food was amazing as we tasted dishes from the regions we were passing through as well as other French delicacies such as frogs legs and snails.
This is a great way to relax and unwind, meet new people and come home feeling refreshed and relaxed.
